Five tips to protect your vehicle from the sun this summer
June 16 2020,
The sun, while it is good for us in the summer, can be a nightmare for your car with the heat it can cause. Here are five ways to combat it to ensure your vehicle lasts longer, while making life easier for you in the process.
1 - Mechanical maintenance
We can never say it enough, regular maintenance of a vehicle's mechanics is the best weapon against trouble. While we tend to do it as winter approaches, we sometimes forget to do it when summer arrives. But with the heat, this season is just as hard, if not harder on your vehicle's mechanics. Therefore, a fluid, belt and duct check is necessary before taking the road in the summer. At the heart of these checks must be the cooling system, the key element that allows the engine to run at peak performance even when the heat wave hits.
2 - Protection of the bodywork
The sun can have a devastating effect on the paintwork of a car. Consequently, it is important to protect it, first of all with frequent washing to prevent deposits from permanently settling on it. Then, the application of a good wax is desirable to prevent the sun's rays from torturing it. Finally, for optimal protection, a sealer is strongly recommended.
3 - Park in the shade
This advice is so simple that you forget to apply it. The best way to protect your vehicle from the sun is to park it in the shade. As you know, the difference in temperature between a shady spot and another exposed spot is immense. Imagine how much cooler your vehicle can be during all the hours it is stationary.
4 - Good tires
There are two things that tend to happen in hot weather with your tires. First, their pressure rises quietly as the temperature does the same. We're talking about one degree every five degrees Celsius or so. Driving with over-inflated tires can be dangerous, which makes it imperative to check the pressure on a regular basis. Also, if your tires are a few years old, make sure the tread is free of cracks. Cracks can appear over time, especially in hot, dry weather.
5 - A screen for the windshield
If you can't park in the shade to prevent the sun from attacking the interior of your vehicle, there are two ways to protect your vehicle. First with a sun shield for the windshield, then with tinted windows, making sure you follow the rules in this regard. A cabin that is protected in this way will be cooler and its surfaces will be able to "survive" longer.
