How Mazda’s SKYACTIV Technology Provides an Efficient and Fun Drive

Mazda’s SYACTIV technology is a great way to keep fuel costs and emissions down without having to rely on expensive hybrid or electric tech. Further than simply helping reduce costs, SKYACTIV tech also helps create a fun drive and stronger relationship between driver and car.

The SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine is designed to produce more low- and mid-range torque by employing a high 13.0:1 compression ratio that improves fuel efficiency by 15 per cent. In addition to that, the SKYATCIV-G engine provides cylinder deactivation in light-load driving environments, such as when cruising on the highway. So, you’re using less fuel but you’re still able to enjoy the benefits of a powerful naturally-aspirated engine without the increased fuel usage that goes with that.

Taken a step further, we have the SKYACTIV-G 2.5T Dynamic Pressure Turbo engine, which provides a 10.5:1 compression ratio. Other tech includes a water jacket spacer within the engine block to reduce coolant heat loss, while at lower RPMs, a series of valves are closed to help reduce the volume of the exhaust ports. This helps save fuel -- good for efficiency – but also reduces turbo lag, which is great for driver involvement. It also gets a 4-3-1 exhaust manifold for better fuel scavenging and exhaust gas is supplied to the turbo’s turbine more efficiently, providing smoother engine response. Speaking of smoothness: the EGR is also cooled to help prevent engine knocking and lower exhaust gas temperatures, improving efficiency once again.

At the end of the day, if you’re looking for a fun, efficient drive without the cost or reliability questions of a hybrid system, with SKYACTIV, Mazda proves that there’s plenty of driving fun and efficiency to be had from the tried, tested and true combustion engine. Drive any Mazda car or SUV, and you’ll be able to feel the difference right asway.

How i-Activ AWD and Winter Tires Work Together for British Columbia Winter Driving

British Columbia presents winter driving challenges that shift dramatically within short distances. Metro Vancouver drivers navigate coastal rain in Burnaby, then encounter snow-covered mountain passes on the Sea-to-Sky Highway toward Whistler. Weekend trips to the Interior involve icy conditions, while daily commutes may stay entirely on wet pavement. This geographic diversity makes winter...
