Mazda’s PHEV Technology in the CX-70 and CX-90: Efficiency, Range, and Performance for a Modern Drive

Mazda’s new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models, the CX-70 and CX-90, introduce a balance of efficiency, range, and performance. These PHEV systems are designed to offer the versatility of electric-only driving for short commutes, along with a gasoline engine for longer journeys.

Here’s a closer look at what Mazda’s PHEV technology brings regarding charging, range, and overall driving experience.

Charging and Range

The Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 PHEVs both feature a battery pack with an electric-only driving option, which is ideal for short trips or city driving. Mazda estimates that drivers can achieve around 42 kilometres (approximately 26 miles) on a full electric charge. This range covers a good portion, if not all, of typical daily commutes, allowing for an emissions-free drive in many scenarios.

Charging the Mazda PHEV battery is straightforward, and Mazda offers compatibility with Level 1 and Level 2 chargers. Level 1 charging, which uses a standard 120V household outlet, will recharge the battery overnight, making it suitable for regular home use. For those who prefer faster charging, a Level 2 charger can be installed at home or accessed at public charging stations, allowing for a full charge in a shorter time.

Efficiency and Hybrid Driving

Mazda’s PHEV technology doesn’t just offer electric-only driving; it’s designed to enhance fuel efficiency when both the electric motor and gasoline engine work together. In scenarios where electric power alone is insufficient, the gasoline engine provides additional range without stopping and recharging. This combination can result in fewer fuel stops on longer trips, which is particularly beneficial for drivers covering varied distances.

The CX-70 and CX-90 PHEVs optimize power distribution based on driving conditions, automatically switching between electric, hybrid, and gasoline modes. In hybrid mode, the vehicle intelligently combines power sources to minimize fuel consumption while ensuring the performance meets the driver’s needs.

Performance

Mazda’s promise to provide a dynamic driving experience is evident in the performance of its PHEV models. The CX-70 and CX-90 PHEVs are equipped with a 2.5-litre, four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with an electric motor and battery system. Together, they generate a combined output of 323 horsepower that delivers a smooth yet responsive performance. This setup supports not only efficiency but also a level of torque that enhances acceleration and makes merging or overtaking easy on highways.

Mazda’s focus on balanced power and efficient powertrain management means that drivers will experience the confidence of all-wheel drive, which is included as a standard feature. This drivetrain ensures a stable and controlled ride across various terrains and weather conditions. Coupled with Mazda’s intelligent driving modes, drivers can adjust the vehicle’s response to suit different environments, further optimizing traction and stability.

Cold-Weather Reliability

One notable aspect of Mazda’s PHEV system is its performance in colder climates. Both the CX-70 and CX-90 PHEVs are engineered for consistent operation in winter conditions. The battery management system maintains battery health and efficiency in low temperatures, and the vehicles are equipped with features such as a heat pump to warm the cabin efficiently without overloading the battery.

Mazda’s CX-70 and CX-90 PHEV models demonstrate a well-rounded approach to plug-in hybrid technology, combining practical electric range, fuel-efficient hybrid driving, and reliable cold-weather performance. For those considering a PHEV, Mazda’s offerings in these models blend everyday usability with Mazda’s hallmark performance and reliability, making them suitable for various driving needs throughout the year.
