Why are SKYACTIV engines so efficient?

Ever since Mazda SKYACTIV technology was launched in 2012, Mazda vehicles have offered their owners remarkable efficiency. Now more than ever with the cost of gas continuously increasing, Mazda SKYACTIV engines stand out by giving their owners better fuel economy than their direct competitors paired with outstanding performance. But how exactly do SKYACTIV engines improve efficiency? This is what we will be looking at here. It all starts with the way Mazda engines manage and regulate thermal efficiency.

Mazda engineers worked very hard to deliver engines that achieve the highest level of thermal efficiency. This is done in part with technologies such as the exhaust gas recirculation system found in the impressive new 2.5 L turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain. This system can regulate the internal temperature of the gas engine to ensure better efficiency overall. When you manage the internal temperature of the engine, you are creating a more efficient powertrain that will make better use of the fuel that is available to deliver better performance.

Speaking of better performance, the compression ratio of Mazda engines is another feature that really stands out when it comes to overall efficiency.

Mazda SKYACTIV engines are known for their very high compression ratio. In the 2.0-litre and 2.5 L four-cylinder powertrains, this compression ratio reaches 13:1. In the turbocharged four-cylinder, the compression ratio reaches 10.5:1.

A high compression ratio means that the engine makes better use of every single drop of fuel. This means that you get more performance out of the fuel you put in the vehicle which leads to better overall efficiency while also delivering more torque and enhanced performance.

Overall, this means that you get roughly 15% better fuel economy with a SKYACTIV engine compared to previous Mazda engines. This is what makes Mazda vehicles so special. To learn more, or to experience SKYACTIV technology for yourself, give us a call today.

How i-Activ AWD and Winter Tires Work Together for British Columbia Winter Driving

British Columbia presents winter driving challenges that shift dramatically within short distances. Metro Vancouver drivers navigate coastal rain in Burnaby, then encounter snow-covered mountain passes on the Sea-to-Sky Highway toward Whistler. Weekend trips to the Interior involve icy conditions, while daily commutes may stay entirely on wet pavement. This geographic diversity makes winter...
